POSITION TITLE:  Swiss CNC Machinist – Set Up/Operator







Sets up and operates a variety of machines to mill and/or turn metallic and nonmetallic workpieces to produce, maintain, or repair parts for customer requirements, applying knowledge of machine shop procedures, , a variety of machine-tool setup and operating techniques, metal and plastic properties, and custom-machining methods.  Troubleshoots set ups and run and modifies NC Code to improve job performance.  To set up and run various machines using the correct speeds, feeds, and tools to assure the machine is operating at its peak performance as well as assuring that the completed work meets all customer requirements.




Group I


a.          Studies job folders including routers, set up sheets, set up photo’s, blueprints to understand the sequence of operations and finished dimensions of work piece. 

b.           Selects and mounts correct cutting tools and tooling needed for each job.

c.          Lifts and positions work piece on machine table manually or with hoist, and secures it using clamps, bolts, or fixtures. 

d.           Selects feed rate, cutting speed, depth of cut, and milling cutter, applying knowledge of metal properties and shop mathematics. 

e.            Mounts tools in tool holders/turret/spindle, and positions cutter and work piece in relation to each other. 

g.          Sets up highly complex 8-13 Axis CNC Swiss Screw machines and CNC Mill Turns.

h.          Analyzes work problems and provides problem solving thru troubleshooting process and programs. Modifies NC Code as required to improve effectiveness of the job.

i.            Runs jobs, maintaining time control and quantity reporting.

j.            Confirms that their jobs are running within estimated times printed on routers in job folders.

k.          Plan work for lights out manufacturing and maintains machines

l.            Follows company procedures for quality and job requirements , including, but not limited to:

                                                                          i.      First Article Inspections,

                                                                        ii.      In Process Inspections,

                                                                      iii.      Set Up Sheets,

                                                                      iv.      Machine time sheets

                                                                        v.      Daily time slips, and

                                                                      vi.      Job folder step sign off’s.

                                                                    vii.      Confirm that job folder paperwork and routers are filled in/completed properly before going to Quality Control for final inspection, if running job to completion.  This includes:

1.      Qty Made on Router

2.      Steps signed off for inspection status and qty good and bad.

3.      Tooling inventory location logged in ‘Part Notes’ section of job router upon completion of job

m.        Confirm that Tooling Inventory Log is completed with Job # and Shelf location in Tooling Log, if running job to completion.

n.          Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product, and suggests changes to increase efficiency of jobs.

o.           (May) Assist in training new workers. 



-Training and Experience:  Minimum 5 years of working experience in the job requirements in this Job Description.  Vocational education or apprenticeship preferred. High School Diploma.

-Must Exhibit strong understanding on NC Code and Fanuc, Mitsubishi or Siemens machine controls.

-Must have your own tools for the trade.

-Preferred Equipment Experience includes Mori Seiki, Citizen, Traub machines.
