Our client is a leading global manufacturer of specialty chemicals for use in consumer and industrial products.  We are conducting a search for an Research and Technology Manager to join their Smart Materials Research and Development team in their Wilmington, DE area innovation center.  This role is responsible for maintaining an effective new product, data, and applications development program meeting customer and market needs. Applications include coatings, paint, adhesives, sealants and elastomers.  This highly visible role will be the ‘face’ of the company’s Smart Materials technology in North America.

  • Manage the activities of the Smart Materials R&D team ensuring projects are suitably defined, agreed, planned, resourced and positioned to meet business growth.
  • Manage the overall performance of the Smart Materials R&D team, including recruitment, coaching, career development training, and discipline.
  • Direct reports may include team leaders, scientists, co-op, interns and graduate trainees.
  • Speed up innovation developments and bring further depth (preferably in dispersancy & rheology), with formulation experiences.
  • Take lead of Global Smart Materials R&D team in areas new to the company, for example, composites, circular economy, and barrier technologies.
  • Scout market for novel technologies for the company’s Smart Materials category, wider novel industrial applications, and identify potential opportunities for smart partnering or M&A.
  • The Manager will also: support scale-up work via consultation and in person; accompany sales on customer visits as may be necessary to secure business; write and present papers at major technical / trade conferences; help design/perform experiments to develop solutions to technical service issues; assist in rectifying product quality issues; and actively participate in business team meetings.
  • BS/MS/Ph.D in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science
  • 6 to 10 years of experience in Coatings/Adhesives/Sealants/Elastomer(CASE) formulation, especially formulating paints for the industrial or automotive industries. Application and development expertise in polymer additives are desirable.
  • Proven track record of commercially viable innovations
  • Strong presentation and technical writing skills with proficiency in MS Office
  • General knowledge of surfactant chemistry and its related application as applied to CASE, is preferred
  • General knowledge of dispersants, wetting and corrosion inhibition is preferred
